Trump believes China, Mexico, and Canada have deliberately refused to address the challenges of illegal immigrants and drug smuggling into the US.
American President-Elect Donald Trump has vowed to hit China, Canada, and Mexico with new tariffs after his inauguration on January 20, 2025, as part of moves to force them to crack down on illegal immigration and the smuggling of drugs into the United States.
Trump, in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, said he would sign an executive order that will impose a 25% tariff on goods coming from Canada and Mexico after being sworn into office.
He says the tariff will remain in place until Mexico and Canada deal with the surge of illegal immigrants into the US from their borders.
Trump also accused China of failing to impose the death penalty on drug smugglers as agreed with the US and said America “will be charging China an additional 10% tariff, above any additional tariffs” once he returns to the White House until Beijing cracks down on the smuggling of fentanyl into the US.

A spokesperson of the Chinese embassy in the US told the BBC that “the idea of China knowingly allowing fentanyl precursors to flow into the United States runs completely counter to facts and reality.”
“China believes that China-US economic and trade cooperation is mutually beneficial in nature.
“No one will win a trade war or a tariff war,” the source added.
A Canadian source also told Reuters that Trump held a discussion with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shortly after his tariff threat and described the meeting as “good.”
Mexico’s finance ministry said the US is its “top trade partner, and the USMCA provides a framework of certainty for national and international investors.”
Trump believes that “Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long-simmering problem” of illegal immigrants.
“It is time for them to pay a very big price,” the 47th President of the United States vowed.
