Musa is on his third AFCON outing with the Super Eagles.
Ahmed Musa, the captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria has announced that the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon will be his last outing for Nigeria at the tournament.
The 29-year-old former Kano Pillars player made this public in the pre-match conference for Nigeria’s first game at the tournament against Egypt. He, however, noted that he is not yet retiring from the team as he has his sight on the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
“I didn’t say I will retire from international football after this AFCON, but this will be my last AFCON, and we still have the World Cup that I will go,” the former Leicester City man said.
Nigeria is in group D of the continental tournament alongside 7-time winners, Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau. Nigeria’s opening match will be against the Pharaohs of Egypt on Tuesday, 11 January 2022 at the Stade Roumde Adjia stadium in Garoua. The Super Eagles will face Sudan on Saturday 15th and Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday 19th at the same venue.
Since Musa made his debut for the national team in 2010, he has been a regular face in the Super Eagles. The ongoing tournament would be his third AFCON outing. He was part of Stephen Keshi’s team that won the tournament in 2013 in South Africa. The Fatih Karagümrük star was part of the team that represented Nigeria in the 2019 AFCON in Egypt where the team won bronze.
The former CSKA Moscow player is Nigeria’s highest goal scorer at the World Cup. He scored two goals each at the 2014 and 2018 World Cup in Brazil and Russia respectively. In addition, he is the most capped player for the Super Eagles. He has made 103 appearances so far, scoring 14 goals in the process.
