Onyeka Onwenu Was Sacked For Dedicating Song To Goodluck Jonathan

Legendary Nigerian musician, Onyeka Onwenu, has narrated how she was relieved of her duties at the National Centre for Women Development.

Onyeka, who has worked in the media and entertainment industry, activism and politics, made this public in an interview on Channels TV. The singer narrated her political activities, contribution to Nigeria, and other endeavours.

Narrating how her political sojourn at the Centre for Women Development ended, the singer said: “I would like to thank ex-President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and his wife, Patience Jonathan (popularly known as Mama Peace), for allowing me to lead at the National Centre for Women Development. My team and I turned the place around for the better, and money started coming into the organization. I outperformed previous Director-Generals at the agency.”

Explaining why she was removed from her position as the Director-General for the agency, she said: “I could not continue because somebody did not want me there. I heard stories that I sang ‘Run, Goodluck Run’ and ‘Mama Peace’ for Jonathan and his wife, respectively. I sang both songs while I was in office at my own expense.”

“I am a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Some people urged the new stakeholders to retain me in the position due to my performance, but I did not struggle with fate.”

The 69-year-old activist said she does not regret singing nor did she have an apology for it. In her words: “I wrote the song, Mama Peace, for a woman I admire. I have no apology concerning both songs because she is indeed Mama Peace”.

Onyeka Onwenu was appointed as the Director-General for the Centre for Women Development in 2013 by former President, Goodluck Jonathan. She was relieved of her duty in 2016. She had earlier served as the Chairperson of  Imo State Council of Arts and Culture.
