The FC Porto defender is optimistic about Nigeria’s chances against the Egyptians.
Super Eagles defender, Zaidu Sanusi, has vowed to do what it takes to ensure that Egyptian national team star player, Mohammed Salah, is silent throughout Nigeria’s opening match against the Pharaohs in the Group D of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations at Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua, Cameroon on Tuesday.
Zaidu made this known in an interview with Complete Sports before the team departed Abuja for Garoua in Cameroon. The left-back stated that he is not scared of marking out Salah if selected by the coach to play that role.
According to the Porto defender: “I have played against Salah in his Liverpool colours twice this season in the Champions League and I am not afraid to play against him again. Though we lost both legs of the UEFA Champions League, I was able to minimize his forays and reduce his influence in the two defeats.”
He further told Complete Sports that “having played against him, I am confident that we can keep him quiet and stop the Egyptians attack from hurting us. We have a young team and a good attack that can score goals, so the Egyptians should fear us too. I believe we can beat them if we get our tactics right.”
When quizzed about the favourites for the tournament, Zaidu responded: “If we can win the 2021 AFCON, I will say we are among the favourites but we have to try and qualify from the group first. We want to win and make our history. It is not going to be easy, but by the grace of God, we can make it happen.”
The Super Eagles will face the North African side on Tuesday, January 11 (5pm WAT). Meanwhile, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau will slug it out later that day at the same venue.
