Xavi Edges Closer To Barca Return As Al Sadd Confirms Departure

Former FC Barcelona player Xavier Hernandez has moved closer to joining the Spanish giants as their new coach after Al Sadd confirmed his departure from the Qatari outfit on Friday.

A statement from Al Sadd said: “Club administration have approved the transfer of Xavi to Barcelona after the payment of the clause stipulated in his contract. Xavi is considered an important part of our history and we wish him every success in the future.’’

Xavi’s appointment comes after the sacking of another club legend Ronald Koeman on October 27 following a 1-0 league loss to Rayo Vallecano. The Spaniard who won the 2010 World Cup in South Africa will take over reins from interim coach Sergi Barjuan who has registered a draw and a win in the two games he has been in charge of Barca.

An emotional homecoming will see Xavi who won 25 trophies as a player for Barca between 1997 and 2015 take charge of the Catalunya club in a very difficult time in its history. Xavi won the Champions League four times at Barca and eight La Liga titles amongst other honours in 767 appearance for the club, registering 185 assists and 85 goals for the Catalan giants.
