Tems and Omah Lay were arrested in Uganda for performing in a concert and breaking COVID-19 protocols in 2020.
Singer Tems has narrated her ordeal when she was arrested and imprisoned for a few days in Uganda in 2020.
During an interview with ES Magazine, the “Me & U” crooner said the experience was humbling, but she feels honoured to have lived it.
She recalled being locked up in a small cell with other women and the threat of being beaten up if she “misbehave.”
“Prison was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I actually feel honoured to have had because otherwise, I would never have thought about these people, and to be in their presence was very humbling,” Tems narrated.
“I asked one of the girls there, “Do they beat people up here? Am I gonna be beat up?’ And she was like, ‘Only if you misbehave.’”
It will be recalled that on December 13, 2020, Tems and fellow Nigerian singer Omah Lay were arrested for performing in a concert and breaking COVID-19 protocols.

They were both arraigned in court on December 14 for charges related to performing “acts that are likely to cause the spread of infectious disease COVID-19.”
The Nigerian government intervened through the Nigeria Diaspora Commission, and both singers were released after spending two days in prison.
Tems believes that the experience shaped her perception of life and is happy to have encountered women in detention and their stories.
