Nine top Manchester United players have unfollowed Mason Greenwood on Instagram amidst rape and sexual assault allegations.
The United forward was arrested by the Greater Manchester Police Department following a series of social media posts shared by his girlfriend, Harriet Robson, via her Instagram story. The released posts revealed her bruises wounded body and an audio note allegedly the voice of her and her lover, Greenwood.
In a swift reaction to condemn Mason’s attitude, top players, in the United team like David De Gea, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, have distanced themselves by not following the young star on Instagram despite following other team members.
Others like Phil Jones, Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles, Jesse Lingard, Feed are also not following the English forward who is at the centre of allegations bordering on physical abuse and rape against his 18-year-old girlfriend.
Meanwhile, Manchester United has also released statements condemning the assaults allegations and as well placed the striker on an indefinite suspension following the claims.
“We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media,’’ the club statement said on Sunday.
“We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established.Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.
“Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.”
However, the club’s captain, Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Raphael Varanne, Luke Shaw are in a group of team members still following the social media account of the detained united forward amidst the controversies.
Greenwood has remained in detention since Sunday and is yet to be released by the Manchester Police.
“Greater Manchester Police was made aware earlier today (Sunday 30 January) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence,’’ a police statement said.
“An investigation was launched and, following enquiries, we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing.”
Mason Greenwood has made 129 appearances for Manchester United netting 35 goals. In 2019, he became the first Manchester United player to feature in the Champions League at age 17.
