Talent hunt is common on the screen of Nigerians. Different organizers hold talent shows to identify exceptionally gifted individuals amongst hundreds and thousands of Nigerians with the hope of making them superstars in the entertainment industry. We take you through a list of six Nigerian Idol winners that have clinched the grand prize.
Yeka Onka
In 2011, the maiden edition of the Nigerian Idol kicked off. Among contestants who battled for the prestigious prize to become the Nigerian Idol, then 26-year old Elizabeth Onwuka, popularly known as “Yeka Onka” emerged the first Nigerian Idol over favourite contender, Naomi Ebiama.
The Abia-born singer was awarded the grand prize which included N7.5 million naira, a recording contract with Sony, a car, and a paid trip to South Africa. She has two singles to her collections “Follow You” and “Ewa Ba Mi Jo”. Over a decade already, the gifted singer, Yeka is yet to make a mark among top superstars in the music industry.
Mercy Chinwo
Mercy Chinwo won the season two edition of the Nigeria Idol in 2012. Mercy Chinwo became the second female to win the grand prize. The singer’s outstanding performances during the show helped her bag the grand winner prize offer which included a cash prize of N7.5 million, a recording contract, and a brand new car.
During her time in the competition, Mercy selected award-winning singer, Omawumi, as her mentor and didn’t fall beyond expectations. Later that year, she performed at Omawunmi’s concert and also featured in her very first film role in Yvonne Nelson’s House Of Gold, where she starred alongside Majid Michel and Omawumi amongst others.
The EeZee Conceptz star has released many singles and two albums to her collections; “The Cross: My Gaze,’’ produced in 2018 and most recently “Satisfied” released in 2020, the ‘Excess Love’ crooner continues to shine in the music industry.
Moses Obi
Moses Obi-Adigwe popularly addressed as Moses clinched the topmost position in the Season 3 of the show, becoming the first male to win the Nigerian Idol against all odds in 2013. He went home with the mouthwatering prize of N7.5 million, a recording contract, and a brand new car.
In 2013, Moses nicknamed ‘Teddy Bear’ released three singles, ‘Love in the Air’, ‘Number One’ and ‘Love Letter’ featuring Eva Alordiah.
Evelle
The then 23-year old lady won the season 4 of the Etisalat sponsored Nigerian Idol competition. An Edo indigene, Evolve Zibili (or simply Evelle) is one strong performer that knows how to captivate her audience with thrilling performances.
She was once a jeweler and a backup singer for a popular band in Lagos before contesting in the show.
K-Peace
Kunle Ogunrombi popularly known as K-peace brought back the male folks to winning ways as he emerged the ultimate winner of the Nigerian Idol Season 5. K-peace beat his arch-rival, Dolu, and 29 other contestants to win the swooping sum of 7.5 million naira, SUV,and a recording deal with Universal Music Company.
While on the show, he performed pop, rap and R&B songs in Fuji style. He became so popular when he performed the fuji version of the evergreen “All Of Me” by John Legend.
Kingdom
After a five-year break, the Nigerian Idol TV show returned in 2021 with the sixth edition. In the keenly contested competition, Kingdom beats Francai Atela to become the sixth winner of the show in July 2021.
Kingdom earned the grand cash prize of N30 million naira, a brand new SUV, 6 track EP recording deal, 3 music videos included, an all-expense-paid trip to Seychelles, and a weekend gateway to Dubai for 2.
Reacting to his emergence as winner, Kingdom ascribed his victory to his grandmother who had always prophesied his greatness long before she passed away. The Bayelsa born is an undergraduate studying Computer Science and Informatics from the Federal University Otuoke.
