Pinnick is impressed with Eguaveon’s exploits with the national team so far.
President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, has stated that the interim head coach of the Super Eagles, Augustine Eguaveon, might retain his role if the team should win the ongoing AFCON in Cameroon.
Remember, Eguaveon was brought in as the interim coach of the team after the sack of Gernot Rohr last month. Before his appointment, Eguaveon had been working as the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation.
Newly appointed head coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, who has handled sides like Sporting CP in Portugal, Al Ahly in Egypt, and the Saudi Arabia national team, is scheduled to resume fully after the end of 2021 AFCON. His main task will be Nigeria’s qualification for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
However, NFF President, AmajuPinnick, in an interview with AFP stated that Eguaveon might retain his role in the Super Eagles as head coach if he leads the team to glory in Cameroon.
“We know that Eguaveon can do the job expertly, but we also know that he will be more useful controlling the technical department. If Eguaveon win the Cup of Nations, we might have a rethink. In that case, the foreign coach would become the technical director,’’ Pinnick Hinted.
Pinnick also commented on the team’s performances in their first two matches at the AFCON, and the need to sustain the momentum.
The CAF executive said: “It is important for us to sustain the winning mentality while we keep our heads on our shoulders. We are yet to win anything here except point.’’
Nigeria has already booked a place in the next round of the competition and will face the Djuturus of Guinea-Bissau in their last Group D fixture by 8pm (WAT), on Wednesday, January 19, 2022.
