The widow of Odumegwu Ojukwu has lamented towards the state of affairs in the once vibrant party.
Nigerian politician, diplomat, and ex-beauty queen Bianca Ojukwu has described the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), a political party with stronghold in Anambra State as a secret cult. The widow of late Biafran leader Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu made her stance known in a statement while marking the posthumous birthday of her husband on November 4.
Bianca and her late husband Ojukwu were strong members of the APGA. Ojukwu vied for Nigeria’s presidency in 2003 under the platform of the party, but less than 10 years after his death (2011), Bianca says “APGA is now like a secret cult, and this has reduced our once vibrant party to a shadow of its former self.’’
She would go on to lament on the movement of party members to other parties, and blamed “bad leadership’’ for the outcome.
“Bad leadership has left a deeply wounded and visibly divided party, with members decamping from the party almost on a daily basis with the alacrity of rats deserting a sinking ship,’’ Bianca said.
“Curiously, they are almost all defecting to APC. Our party has lost almost half of our state and national legislators, several principal members of our board of trustees, including the secretary of the board.”
APGA will be hoping to maintain its stronghold in Anambra in Saturday’s election with its governorship candidate as Charles Soludo, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Andy Uba of the APC and Valentine Ozigbo of the PDP are strong contenders for the seat.
